The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a public advisory urging consumers to discontinue use of the popular over-the-counter cold remedy, Zicam. Products such as Zicam Nasal Gel and Zicam Nasal Swabs have been linked to permanent loss of smell, also known as anosmia.
Anosmia can change a person's quality of life, not to mention limit their ability to detect smoke or other harmful odors that may endanger a person's life. According to the FDA anosmia associated with the use of Zicam Nasal Gel and Zicam Nasal Swabs may be permanent. Since 1999, the FDA has received about 130 reports of loss of smell due to using Zicam cold remedy products. The damage is likely linked to the active ingredient zinc, which can permanently damage olfactory nerve receptors needed for smell.
If you or a loved one have suffered anosmia as a direct result of using Zicam cold remedy products, you may be entitled to financial compensation from Zicam's manufacturer, Matrixx Initiatives.
