Suffocation Deaths Lead to Crib Recalls

Crib Recall AttorneysThe New York Times has reported that one million cribs designed by a Pennsylvania manufacturer, Simplicity for Children, have been recalled because of the suffocation deaths of at least two children. According to the article, the recent recall is the company's fourth in a little over two years.

The cribs were made in China and sold under the Simplicity and Graco brand names between January 1998 through May 2007. The problem with the cribs involves a faulty drop-rail side which can detach thus creating a space where infants may become trapped. Citing the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the New York Times reported that a hardware and design flaw in the cribs allows for incorrect installation of the drop-rail side.

Simplicity for Children reportedly allowed two years to pass after the first fatal crib incident of 9-month old Liam Johns. The company provided no warnings or recalls to parents and consumers. In the interim, there were reportedly two other infant suffocations reported where the children died while sleeping in these cribs.
