On Friday, September 12, 2008, a Metrolink commuter train crashed head-on into a freight train near Los Angeles, California, killing 25 people, and injuring more than 130 of the 220 passengers who were on the commuter train. The wreck is being called the deadliest train disaster in fifteen years in the United States.
The cause of the crash was the commuter train's failure to heed at a stop signal. These stop signals for trains are equivalent to road signs for automobiles. When a train receives a signal to stop, the train is supposed to halt until any and all traffic passes.
Though the exact reason why the commuter train failed to stop at the stop signal is unknown at this time, an initial investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board suggests that the engineer blamed for running the red stop signal may have been text messaging immediately prior to the crash, thus causing him to not see the red stop signal.
