Online Dating Site Under Scrutiny For Questionable Practices

True.com Under ScrutinyOn March 19, 2007, the New York Times reported that online dating service True.com, has been criticized by some of its subscribers for questionable practices. Specifically, Preston Roder, a subscriber from Illinois, claims that he attempted to cancel his subscription but continued to receive an array of charges over the next several months. According to the New York Times, the founder of True.com, Herb Vest, stated that the company has recently revised its cancellation policy and stated, "We are not as good as I want to be. We still have an ongoing project to improve."

In addition to cancellation issues, True.com has been criticized for sending artificial "winks", which are messages of interest from other members. The New York Times reports that a subscriber from Washington, Dan Consiglio, spoke with a woman from whom he received a wink and she stated that she had not, in fact, winked at him. Mr. Vest admitted that True.com sends artificial winks.
